Literature Text

The sunset-emblazoned sky
-Stained with hues like that of a flame
Brilliant in its perishing.

              I think it no wonder
That you gaze into its vastness
              And mourn.

This evening evokes vivid recollections
Of the first day after we escaped together.
Prairie unraveling endlessly into the beyond,
Sparse clouds scarring the heavens
-Anticipating what would soon
Become of our branded hearts.

Her tragic sacrifice bears heavily upon us.

Still.

I set my guitar on my lap,
Careful of the moment’s fragility
-Tentatively strum a melancholy chord
That seems to resonate into eternity.

Meloncholy stinging
With a wasp’s ferocity
And a memory’s regret
-That will only Burn away
Through the passing of time.

So, under this sunset-emblazoned sky
Slowly receding into the night,
Hear these somber notes I play
And know that you aren’t alone
In your suffering.

              You long for her,
But I hope you can come to accept
The words I do not yet speak.

Through war, tragedy, and devouring Flame,
Still,
I love you.
The narrator is female, for what it's worth.

Here is a sound file of a piece for solo English horn that relates to the poem. It deals mainly with the first half.
